504 GNGTS 2016 S essione 3.1 Geological and geophysical features of the Adriatic plate. The tectonic setting of the Mediterranean area is not well constrained and remains controversial, being still open the debate in identifying the internal and external boundaries of the Adriatic plate (Battaglia, 2004). The geodynamic events of the Appennine (Carminati et al. , 2003), Alpine (Kummerow et al., 2004) and Dinaric (Di Stefano et al. , 2009) subductions allowed the formation of a foreland basin system in the northern portion of the Adriatic Sea, surrounding its western, northern, and eastern margins (Cuffaro et al. , 2010) (Fig. 1). Middle Triassic extensional movements and the consequent crustal thinning are suggested by the presence of gabbroid intrusions, thermal cooling and generation of horsts and grabens (Bertotti et al., 1998; Pamic and Balen, 2005; Fig. 1 – Total magnetic field of the study area (up); Multiridge section of the 3rd derivative order along profile AA’ (down). The red straight lines converge at singular points in the source region.
