According to this interpretation the bauxitic unconformity may be the result of a short deformation induced by a lithospheric bulge which has provoked the flexural uplift of the internal sectors of Adria (D’Argenio and Mindszenty, 1991, 1992). This deformation should have been controlled by intraplate stresses generated far away along the convergent plate margins, propagated inwards according to the model of Cloetingh (1988). The reaction of the basinal sedimentation to the subaerial exposure of the Apulian platform, coeval with the A unconformity was the deposition of thin pelagic sediments of “Scaglia calcarea”, Cenomanian-Turonian in age (upper part of the stratigraphic unit 2) in the Southern Adriatic Basin. This suggests a starvation of the Southern Adriatic Basin as an answer to the emersion of the platform.
