530 GNGTS 2016 S essione 3.2 carbonate turbidites supplied from the shelf alternate with clastic sediments (Unit 4b). The trend of carbonate-siliciclastic facies recognized in the Late Oligocene-Early Miocene suggests a progressive deepening of the basin. The increase of the space available for the sedimentation resulted in higher sedimentation rates, increasing from 20-30 m/My to 60-70 m/My. This trend was reversed from the D unconformity, when a relative sea level fall took place with a rate lower than the rate of subsidence (Type 2 sequence boundary), producing minor emersions of the platform and the slope. During the Late Miocene the siliciclastic supply of the South-Adriatic foredeep highly increased (Unit 5b), being supplied from source areas composed from the outer thrusts of the Dinarids-Hellenids. In this period the Apulian platform constituted again the stable foreland of the Apenninic thrust belt, being deformed. The E Messinian unconformity may be put in relationships with a general sea level fall, with an eustatic rate higher than the rate of subsidence (Type 1 sequence boundary), which verified about 5.5 My ago, generating the well-known salinity crisis of the Mediterranean (Cita, 1982). As a next step the Plio-Pleistocene Adriatic foredeep generated and was filled by the siliciclastic turbidites of the Unit 6b, showing a progressive deepening towards south-east. The Adriatic foredeep was progressively supplied by turbidite fans, prograding in a longitudinal way and from sediments of outer basinal plain, supplied from the Apenninic chain during its formation (Casnedi et al. , 1982).
