GNGTS 2021 S essione 1.1 60 Seismotectonic setting The remarkable extensional tectonics affecting the area during the whole Quaternary led to the genesis of recent and very fresh fault escarpments along the E and N border of the Rieti Basin (e.g., Apoleggia, Cantalice). This evidence, together with the data collected in the paleo- seismological sites of Poggio Bustone, Pié di Colle and Caporio (Fig. 1), led Michetti et al . (1995) Fig. 1 - Location map of the study area; a) Rieti Basin DEM and trace of the faults from ITHACA Working Group (2019); black dots are sites with structural analysis reported by Micarelli et al . (2003); yellow rectan- gles are the paleoseismological trenches by Michetti et al . (1995); thick red lines are the structures under study: AP, Apoleggia – Piedicolle Fault; VSM, Santa Maria Village Fault; SL, San Liberato Fault; faults along the S border of the basin (Rieti and Cittaducale municipalities) have been investigated under a related scientific agreement by a companion ISPRA-INGV team (Comerci et al ., this volume); b) and c) 2020/2021 investiga- tions at San Liberato (b) and Piedicolle – Apoleggia (c); yellow lines are the 2021 trench sites at Cruciano (b) and Apoleggia (c); red lines are ERT profiles; green lines are GPR profiles.
