Session 3.2 ___ GNGTS 2023 different factors, e.g., changes in the natural condition of the soil, vegetation removal during the railway construction and role of railway embankment as a barrier to the surface water run-off. In this contest, the obtained results will represent valuable information to address the design of engineering solutions to ensure structural stability of infrastructures, such as reinforcing the construction foundations and maintaining the thermal balance of the ground. For example, thermosyphons represent a new technology recently used in various Russian permafrost areas to stabilize infrastructures. Another solution could be the diversion of the railroad where the active layer is thinner and the underlying permafrost thicker and stable. Moreover, the proposed integrated methodology can be used for a time-lapse monitoring of the permafrost table and active layer. Repetition of the surveys in the same places through the years, would enable to monitor the rapid evolution of permafrost conditions and to deal with the extreme landscape variability, instability and heterogeneity of the field area.
