Session 1.1 GNGTS 2023 Fig. 1: Horizontal GPS velocity field with 95% error ellipses considered in this work. The field includes 899 stations. We use a seismic catalog that includes earthquakes in the 1981-2018 time-span (Latorre et al. , 2023). Using the nearest neighbor algorithm of Zaliapin and Ben-Zion (2013), we estimate the independent seismicity, i.e. the seismicity that is not caused by earthquake interaction processes. We then divide the Apennines into areas with different geodetic strain rate values (i.e., strain rate zonation), analyzing the spatial distribution of independent seismicity in each of these domains (Fig. 2). We evaluate the correlation between independent seismicity rates and geodetic strain rates and describe the implications of using different strain rate fields on the computation of quantities that are relevant for the seismogenic potential, such as the maximum magnitude (assumed to be the upper bound of a truncated Gutenberg–Richter law). Such quantities can be estimated considering the moment balance between its accumulation during the interseismic
