Di Bucci 3 1 Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, Italy 2 Università degli Studi di Bologna - Dipartimento di Fisica e Astronomia, Italy 3 Dipartimento della Protezione Civile, Italy Over three decades of investigation on Italian historical earthquakes by the Working Group of the Catalogue of Strong Earthquakes in Italy (Guidoboni et al., 2018 and 2019) led to the retrieval of thousands of visual sources. Being of the most diverse types (engravings, paintings, photographs, film documents, etc.), these sources are useful to scholars from different disciplines for supplementing information on the estimation of damage and other effects, on the response of institutions, on scientific observations, etc. Along with written sources, this evidence contributes to reconstructing an accurate portrait of the effects of earthquakes on both the anthropic and natural environment (Baranello et al., 2019). The informative value of these sources prompted us to begin their systematic retrieval in national and international archives with which specific collaboration agreements have been established, and to organize them in a portal called CFTIvisual, Atlante delle fonti visive dei terremoti italiani ( https://cfti.ingv.it/visual/ , Bianchi et al. 2022 ). The Atlas, developed as part of Task 1, Work Package 1 "Terremoti", of the 2019-2021 Agreement “B2” between the Italian Civil Protection Department and INGV, is addressed to a vast audience: from individuals to scholars of various disciplines, such as restoration science, seismology, engineering, urban planning, historical sciences, and the history of photography and cinematography (Fanelli and Ferrari, 2022). Acknowledgements Part of activities of technological development and data reorganization that led to CFTIvisual has been supported by a grant from Italy’s Presidenza del Consiglio dei Ministri-Dipartimento della Protezione Civile. Nevertheless, the views and conclusions reported are the sole responsibility of its authors, and should not be interpreted as necessarily representing official policies, either expressed or implied, of the Dipartimento della Protezione Civile.
