Tortorici 5 , SERENA (Mapping Seismic Site Effects at REgional and NAtional Scale) PRIN PROJECT_WP2 Working Group 1 Siena University, CNR_IGAG Rome, CentroMS 2 Catania University, CNR_IGAG Rome, CentroMS 3 CNR_ISPC Napoli 4 Siena University 5 CNR_IGAG Rome, CentroMS 6 Torino University Mapping the seismic site effects at regional and national scale is the main challenge of the SERENA PRIN-Project that involves several research groups from different Italian institutions. The work plane includes seven work-packages, aiming at different targets. In particular the WP2 aims at identifying and characterizing homogeneous lithostratigraphic units in the perspective to model and map their behavior in terms of stratigraphic amplification of seismic waves. In pursuing this pioneering goal, the national territory has been classified in large scale Tectono-Stratigraphic Domains (TSD), each characterized by distinctive Neogene-Quaternary tectonic evolution and syn-tectonic stratigraphic records. TSDs are bordered by main regional tectonic lineaments and show internal articulations, due to the fragmentation of the TSD by minor tectonics connected to the border-structures active during the evolution. Within each TSD, distinct “sub-domains”, referring to areas characterized by the homogeneity of the shallow (< 350 m in depth) lithostratigraphy, including the classification of the bedrock and cover units, represent the basal units to spatialize the site stratigraphic amplification effects. Here we illustrate the new classification of the national territory along three regional transects which are representative of the northern, central and southern Italy geological domains.
