Each building in FRIBAS is characterised by 37 parameters related to the location, the main typological, geometrical, structural and foundation characteristics, and the geological and seismic context. The fundamental periods of buildings and soils were estimated experimentally using ambient noise measurements. In this study, we examine the FRIBAS dataset to investigate how construction materials of buildings and soil types may affect the building period and its relationship to the height. Our results show that it is necessary to go beyond a ‘one-fits-all’ numerical period-height (T-H) relationship given by seismic codes for generic building typologies and develop specific T-H relationships that consider both soil and building typologies. Given the importance of soil-structure interaction effects to the dynamic response of buildings, these effects should be accounted for in seismic codes that provide much longer periods than those determined experimentally.
