Session 2.2 GNGTS 2023 Maintenance procedures and seismic risk reduction: intervention strategy on “M.A.P” timber buildings of L’Aquila M. Sciomenta 1 , C. Bedon 2 1 University of L’Aquila, Department of Civil, Construction-Architectural and Environmental Engineering, L’Aquila, Italy 2 University of Trieste, Department of Engineering and Architecture, Trieste, Italy. Introduction The earthquake of L'Aquila on the 6 th April 2009 was the fifth stronger earthquake recorded in Italy ever. The main shock had a moment magnitude (Mw) of 6.3 (5.8 or 5.9 on the local magnitude scale). The losses were 309 human lives, over 1,600 injured, around 67,000 displaced people (Dipartimento della Protezione Civile, 2018) and over 10 billion euro of estimated damages. The effects of the earthquake have been destructive near the epicenter and in the surrounding areas, both for public and private structures. The city center, well-known for its masonry artistic heritage, underwent severe damages and collapses. After the earthquake, homeless citizens of L’Aquila needed temporary housing, pending the rebuilding of their homes. It would have been impossible to build individual prefabricated houses for thousands of people without upsetting the city’s built environment. For the citizens of municipalities close to L’Aquila affected by the earthquake and for some inhabitants of the hamlets of the Municipality of L'Aquila, with a house destroyed or uninhabitable or in the "red zone", "MAP" [Temporary housing modules] were provided as a temporary housing solution (Fig.1). In total, approximately 1,900 timber houses have been planned for the municipalities outside L'Aquila, while approximately 1,400 modules have been built in the Municipality of L'Aquila, of which over 1,100 built by the Civil Protection Department. To these must also be added the more than 360 structures donated by companies, bodies, associations and foundations both as homes for private use and as facilities for citizen services, such as clinics or schools.
