GNGTS 2023 - Atti del 41° Convegno Nazionale

Session 2.2 GNGTS 2023 defendants is simply to be acquitted, the real goal of some scientists is to substantiate the (purported) inadequacy of the seismic hazard model upon which the building code relies. But, has anyone noted that most of the criticism of the building code concerns the provisions for a 10% exceedance probability in 50 years, often without even correcting them for soil type? Unbeknown to many, the current Italian building code foresees four limit states corresponding to four exceedance probability levels in 50 years; what would happen if we compared the observed ground shaking parameters to those expected for a 2% exceedance probability in 50 years, corrected for soil type? We might simply find out that for modern seismology, the purported “vis maior” simply does not exist.
