GNGTS 2023 - Atti del 41° Convegno Nazionale

Session 2.3 - POSTER GNGTS 2023 Is There a Gender Issue in Disaster Science? A Proposal for a Discipline-Specific Gender Equality Plan Tagliacozzo, S. Italian National Research Council (CNR), Institute for Research on Population and Social Policies (IRPPS-CNR), Via Palestro 32, Roma, 00185. Women are underrepresented in most of the STEM disciplines, including geophysics. Disaster science is regarded by many as a separate discipline whose focus is addressing disaster risk and its effects through prevention, response and recovery activities. Disaster science requires the concerted efforts from researchers and practitioners in diverse disciplines such as earth, environmental, engineering, social and economic sciences. As such, gender biases and discriminations specific to each discipline can combine in disaster science in a peculiar way. This poster pursues two objectives. On the one hand, it seeks to present some figures and statistics about the women’s presence and gender biases in geophysics that have been repetitively highlighted in recent years. On the other hand, it intends to promote a reflection on the need for gender-disaggregated data concerning the workforce in the disaster research and propose a gender equality plan (GEP) to unveil and redress gender inequalities and gaps in this discipline.
