Session 1.1 GNGTS 2024 Fig. 3 – Intensity map of the 19 March 1952 earthquake (08.13 GMT) obtained by this study. In conclusion, the March 1952 seismic sequence ruptured the entre S. Tecla fault, frst the northern segment with the foreshocks’ actvity and then the central-southern part with the mainshock. This determined, from a macroseismic point of view, a cumulatve picture of damage not solvable by the analysis of the historical sources. However, the revision produced in this study confrmed that the mainshock was previously underestmated as for the maximum intensity, this determining changes on the earthquake parameters to be reported in the CMTE catalogue: now the epicentral intensity I 0 increases up to VIII-IX EMS, and the corresponding equivalent magnitude up to M L 4.6. Results also have implicatons in terms of local hazard assessment, allow a more precise reconstructon of the seismic history of this fault and therefore a more reliable evaluaton of its seismic potental.
