GNGTS 2024 - Atti del 42° Convegno Nazionale

Session 1.1 GNGTS 2024 a.m. August 14 th , 1409, with an earthquake epicentre near the town, followed by a stronger shock in the night between the 16 th and 17 th . Another earthquake is documented the 9 th of May 1410, and the strongest of the sequence on the 9 th of January 1411. Unspecifed damage is reported to buildings; however, the following transformaton prevents the present-day recogniton of damage. Other earthquakes are known in 1445 and in 1483. Early Modern Time earthquakes . 1495, on Sunday the 13 th of December (Day of S. Lucia) an earthquake took place, certainly important, even if yet not mentoned in the seismic catalogues. At least a corner ( cantone ) of the cathedral collapsed, certainly in the eastern side, likely the Northeastern one. The upper part of the transept and the large new choir were then rebuilt in Renaissance forms by Biagio Rosset (Fig. 1D). Post seismic restoraton involved the twelfh steps leading from the naves to the raised presbytery area. The steps were previously incorrectly referred to the cathedral entrance. Severe damage and partal collapse also afected some portons of the Estense Castle and the towers of the Ducal Palace (Torre Rigobello) and of the Palazzo della Ragione (Torre Ribelli). The city then experienced the local efects of earthquakes generated in other areas (1505, 1511). In 1532, a seismic sequence, lastng at least 50 days, forced Alfonso I’s court to take refuge into the Delizia del Barcheto, at the northeastern corner of the town walls; further seismic damage occurred in 1536. The 1561 earthquakes marked the onset of a long seismic phase that was to last untl 1574. A seismic sequence (23.10-16.11.) was followed by a severely damaging earthquake (24.11) and by other shocks (13-14.12). Damage is reported to the Castello Estense, the North-East vaulted chapel
