APPLIED GEOPHYSICS FOR ENERGY, ENVIRONMENT AND NEW TECHNOLOGIES
Session 3.1
Deep Exploration, Energy Transition and Geo-Resources
Convenors of the session: Erika Barison (OGS) – ebarison@ogs.it
Paolo Mazzucchelli (Aresys) – paolo.mazzucchelli@aresys.it
Vincenzo Lipari (OGS) – vlipari@ogs.it
Lorenzo Petracchini (CNR) – lorenzo.petracchini@cnr.it
Contributions recommended for this session:
· Petrophysical Characterization of the Subsurface
· Geophysical Borehole Logging
· Geophysics for Net-Zero Carbon
· Deep Geophysical Exploration and Reservoir Characterization
· Hydrogen Exploration
· CO2 and Hydrogen Storage
· Monitoring Deep Resources and Deep Reservoir Risks
· Remote Sensing and Data Integration
· Geophysical Data Interpretation in Deep Studies
Geophysical prospecting is widely used to identify and store natural resources underground. These technologies and tools also contribute to the mix of strategies to address anthropogenic CO2 emissions and to achieve net-zero carbon emissions goals. Contributions on different investigation techniques for characterizing Natural Risks and Resources with different resolutions and at different depths (e.g., reflection and refraction seismic, gravimetric, magnetic, electrical/electromagnetic, INSAR methods) are welcome. The session receives contributions illustrating case studies in the fields of exploration of geo-resources and geothermal energy, as well as in the field of greenhouse gas storage. Interdisciplinary approaches are encouraged.

Emanuele Forte (UniTS) – eforte@units.it
Michele Cercato (DICEA UniRoma1 La Sapienza) – michele.cercato@uniroma1.it
Salvatore Martino (DST UniRoma1 La Sapienza) – salvatore.martino@uniroma1.it
Contributions recommended for this session:
· Geophysics for Hydrogeological Properties and Hydrological Dynamics
· Geophysics for Agro-biological Interactions
· Geophysics for Cultural Heritage
· Geophysics for Environmental Risks
· Geophysics for Applied Geology and Engineering
· Time-lapse Geophysical Approaches for Shallow Studies
· Remote Sensing for Near Surface Investigation
· Data Integration for Near Surface Characterization
· Geophysical Data Interpretation for Near Surface Studies
There is a growing need to quantitatively characterize near surface phenomena and anthropic structures and provide a reliable estimate of their geometric, mechanical and hydraulic characteristics using high-resolution, environmentally and economically sustainable techniques. This session is open to contributions illustrating case studies and applications of different geophysical methods, typically at high-resolution, to all the above-mentioned fields. Interdisciplinary approaches are encouraged

· Multiphysics Modeling
· Non-Standard and Interdisciplinary Applications
· AI, Machine Learning, and High-Performance Computing in Applied Geophysics
While Sessions 3.1 and 3.2 focus primarily on target-driven applications (Deep and Near-Surface, respectively), Session 3.3 is dedicated to contributions where the primary focus and innovation lie in the methodology, algorithms, software, or hardware developments, regardless of the specific field of application. The session covers novel approaches and advanced techniques related to geophysical data processing (seismic, electrical/electromagnetic, potential fields), as well as innovative acquisition procedures, inversion, data integration, multiphysics modeling, and AI applications. Case studies illustrating the practical performance of new methods are welcome. Overall, the session promotes multidisciplinarity and encourages the technology transfer of emerging geophysical innovations across the entire community.
